Rules surrounding the base path are among the most misinterpreted in the rule book. The Official Baseball Rules were amended in 2007 to state that the base path (baseline) is not a fixed line on the field. The runner chooses his own baseline and can deviate from this line except when attempting to avoid a tag. When attempting to avoid a tag, he must not stray more than three feet to either side of the line.
