Batter is Awarded 2B
Rule Book Doubles: If a fair batted ball bounces or rolls out of play, this is commonly referred to as a ground rule double. The correct term is actually “rule book double” because it is defined in the baseball rules. When a fair batted ball bounces or rolls out of play, the ball will be ruled dead, and the batter and all base runners will be awarded two bases. This can occur if a ball:
- bounces out of play,
- gets stuck or lost somewhere in the field of play, or
- is deflected into the stands or dugout
Detached Equipment Violations on Thrown Balls: Unlike the one-base award for detached equipment violations on pitched balls, the award for thrown ball violations is two bases.
