Third Baseman Blocking the Base with His Knee

Classic play involving Aaron Boone and Eduardo Perez

Third Baseman Blocking the Base with His Knee

This classic baseball instruction video comes from back in 2003 with Cincinnati Reds third base coach, Tim Foli. Reds broadcaster Chris Welsh asks Tim about a situation where Aaron Boone blocked Eduardo Perez with his knee from tagging third base on a stolen base attempt……is this a legal play by Boone?

It looks to me like Boone was in the act of fielding the ball and wasn’t blocking the base until he had possession of the ball. Looks like in the umpire’s judgement that’s how he saw it also.

No. Can block the path of a runner

Can’t block the runner unless in possession of the ball
