Replay Reversal Sparks Chaos as Rob Thomson Ejected in Phillies–Nationals Inning
The Philadelphia Phillies faced the Washington Nationals on March 30, 2026 in a chaotic sequence that unfolded in the first inning. Nationals outfielder Joey Wiemer grounded into what both teams initially believed was the final out of the frame, as it was unclear whether he had been retired at first base.
With two outs and running on contact, Drew Millas broke for home after rounding third, showing clear intent to score. After Phillies pitcher Taijuan Walker fielded the ball and threw to Rafael Marchan at the plate, Millas was tagged out between third and home on what was believed to be the inning-ending play at first.
However, after a review, umpires ruled that Wiemer had reached first base safely, overturning the out at first and negating the apparent third out. Millas was placed back at third, and Phillies manager Rob Thomson was immediately ejected after coming onto the field to argue the overturned ruling.
Chris Welsh breaks down the play and the ruling.
